MkII Water Pumps suck... |
|
...it might as well be mounted inside the block. It wasn't too bad to get out, and reinstall... but damned if the steering pump, compressor, and alternator will go back quietly. Who the hell designed that damn bracket... if I ever meet them
Ok, I've vented. Hopefully she'll be back together and running before I leave town Monday. At least she's off the stands.

UPDATE |
|
It's all in... back together, running. But now I'm noticing a whine at high RPM, sounds like the intake. Any thoughts?

They are not too bad. But, it did suck the first time I did it.
That whine may be because you need new pulleys. I ignored that "whine" one day while I was on the highway with the ac running, and the next thing I know, I shredded my compressor belt (and you know what else happens after that).
I wanted to replace all of my pulleys, but I got lucky and did some adjustments (combination of compressor, alternator, and water pump) and haven't had a problem since.

I think the PS pump is misaligned, left to right, and that's the last of the squeeling.
How does a pully go bad?

the groove on my pulley got worn down by the belt/water/dirt since there is no cover for the belts on my MKII. The belt was riding really low into that groove. Plus, the sides of the grooves were VERY SHARP, so anything the belt came loose along with the pulley wobbling, the belt would get nicked a little at a time by the sharp edges, and then... no more belt. It took me a few years to realize what was going on, so once I replaced that pulley, I haven't had any problems.
